This year, AMIB is honored to present the 2025 Cochran Award to Steven Bertolini, a remarkable individual whose strength and determination embody the spirit of resilience.
Steven lost his vision in February 2024 as a result of diabetes. Despite undergoing eye surgery, the procedure was not able to restore his sight. At the time, Steven was living alone in his mother’s home after her passing, facing profound loss and navigating a world that had suddenly changed. Adjusting to blindness while coping with grief left him feeling overwhelmed, isolated, and uncertain about the future.
In December 2024, Steven moved to AMIB, marking a new beginning. With the support of our caring staff, he began the challenging process of adapting to yet another “new normal.” Day by day, Steven worked hard to regain a sense of himself and rebuild confidence in his abilities.
Upon joining AMIB, Steven participates in a day program for the first time, giving him renewed opportunities for socialization, connection, and purpose. He has begun physical therapy and now uses a walking stick to support greater independence. Although he continues to face challenges, Steven shows steady progress and admirable perseverance.
His journey is a powerful reminder that growth is not always linear, but with support, encouragement, and belief in oneself, transformation is possible.
AMIB is proud to recognize Steven Bertolini as the 2025 Cochran Award Winner. His courage, dedication, and determination inspire us all.
