CONTINUING THE LEGACY:RITA CORCORAN JOINS THE BOARD

An old black and white photo of Rita, Cousin Paul, Aunt Muriel and Uncle VinnieJoining the AMIB Board is my way of honoring my family’s legacy. My Aunt Muriel and Uncle Vinnie helped found the organization to support adults with disabilities like their son, my cousin Paul. In our family, Paul has always been included in everything we do, shaping our understanding of what it means to truly embrace someone with a disability. Growing up, we never saw disability as something out of the ordinary—Paul was just part of the family. His influence even led many of my cousins, and my sister, into careers in special education.

AMIB is more than just an organization to me; it’s a part of my life. I’ve known many of the residents since I was a kid, and I feel a deep responsibility to continue my aunt’s legacy of care. As Paul’s new guardian, I’m keenly aware of the need to plan for the future, ensuring that he—and others—continue to receive the care and love they deserve. As a guardian, I can attest to the fact it’s crucial for families to think ahead, securing a backup guardian and financial planning to ensure their loved ones’ new guardians care as much as their former guardians.

AMIB is a blessing for its residents. I am committed to ensuring AMIB residents are cared for with dignity, respect and love. I’m honored to be on the Board and look forward to carrying on my family’s legacy and helping to grow the amazing organization that my Aunt and Uncle helped form.
